Continued Wetland Restoration
2010 Improvements
Nearly 20 acres of wetlands on The Teller main
property were restored providing open water for a host of migratory birds. Areas dominated with cattails and sedge were
burnt and excavated creating shallow marsh systems. Several
thousand yards of spoil removed from the wetland excavation projects was
placed on five acres of weed infested uplands. Some 300 shrubs were planted on the reclaimed
spoil sites as well as 200 pounds of perennial grass seed. Today the sites reveal healthy stands of
grass and excellent shrub cover. Previously restored wetlands on the main
property were managed to encourage waterfowl brood habitat. It is estimated that nearly 200 ducklings
were produced on Teller wetlands in 2010!
2009 Improvements
Approximately 40 acres on The Teller have been enhanced to provide seasonal wetlands. A new canal check has been installed to allow for improved water management. Dense cattail stands have been burned and managed to provide for a mosaic of open water and emergent vegetation. Shallow excavation of approximately 12 inches took place on six sites to enhance seasonal wetland conditions. The sites will be inundated in the summer and fall as the groundwater table rises, providing excellent wetland habitat for a host of migrating birds. This project was funded by a $30,000 North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant that was awarded in 2006.
