Executive Director
Job Purpose
The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership, administration and management of the organization's mission programs, Conservation and Education, along with oversight of the day-to-day operations of the company according to the guiding principles and strategic direction set by the Board of Trustees.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Executive Director may perform some or all of the following:
Leadership
- Participate with the Board of Trustees in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization
- Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Trustees on all aspects of the organization's activities
- Foster effective team work between the Board and the Executive Director and between the Executive Director and staff
- Act as a spokesperson for the organization, responsibly reflecting the organization's mission and guiding principles
- Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the Board and jointly with the Board as appropriate
- Represent the organization at community activities to enhance the organization's community profile
Operational Planning and Management
- Develop an annual operating plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization as set forth in the Strategic Plan of The Teller.
- Oversee the efficient and effective planning, implementation and evaluation of the day-to-day operation of the organization
- Ensure that personnel, client, donor and volunteer files are securely stored and privacy/confidentiality is maintained
- As requested, provide information and supporting materials to the Board of Trustees for Board meetings, events, and communications
- Ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization's mission and reflect the priorities of the Board
Human Resources Planning and Management
- Determine staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery
- Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and practices including the development of job descriptions for all staff
- Establish a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations
- Recruit, interview and select staff that have the right skill set, technical knowledge and personal abilities to help further the organization's mission
- Ensure that all staff receive an orientation to the organization and that appropriate training is provided
- Implement a performance management process for all staff which includes monitoring the performance of staff on an on-going basis and conducting an annual performance review
Financial Planning and Management
- Work with staff and the Board (Finance Committee) to prepare a comprehensive annual budget within the framework of the annual operating plan
- Work with the Board in their task of securing adequate funding for the operation of the organization consistent with the both the annual operating plan and long-term strategic direction of the organization
- Research funding sources, oversee the development of fund raising plans and oversee funding proposals to increase the funds of the organization
- Participate in fundraising activities as appropriate
- Approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board
- Ensure that sound legal, bookkeeping, accounting, and audit procedures are followed
- Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization
- Collaborate with the Finance Committee of the board relative to investment direction/decisions associated with the endowment, donor directed and board directed funds
- Collaborate with the Treasurer of the Board and report to the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditures of the organization
Community Relations/Advocacy
- Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, conservation partners, donors, neighbors, politicians, and other stakeholders to help achieve the goals of the organization

- Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem
- Think Strategically: Assess options and actions based on trends and conditions in the environment, and the vision and values of the organization
Experience
- 5 or more years of progressive Executive or Director-level management experience in a voluntary or non-profit sector organization
Working Conditions
- The Executive Director usually works in an office environment, but the mission of the organization will frequently require working in outdoor field conditions and non-standard office workplaces
- The Executive Director typically works a standard work week, but additionally will often work evening, weekends, and overtime hours to accommodate activities such as Board meetings, donor cultivation activities, farming programs and representing the organization at public events
Qualifications
Education
- A Bachelor's degree in conservation, biology, conservation education, environmental studies, business or a related field required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of leadership and management principles as they relate to non-profit/voluntary organizations
- Knowledge of current community challenges and opportunities relating to the mission of the organization
- Knowledge of human resources management
- Knowledge of financial management and major fundraising programs/procedures
- Knowledge of project management
- Knowledge and experience in conservation and land management or related field
- Knowledge and experience in outdoor recreation activities, including hunting and fishing
- Knowledge and experience in public relations and marketing
- Knowledge and experience in outdoor and/or conservation education program development

Salary and Benefits Summary
- $45,000 to $60,000 annually (Negotiable based on level of experience, professional qualifications and housing needs)
