WHITETAIL DEER HUNTING

2009 Whitetail Hunting Season Dates:  

        Volunteer Whitetail Archery Season:  September 12, 2009 - Dec 26, 2009
  • MTFWP Block management Whitetail Archery Season - September 5- December 25. Whitetail deer - archery equipment only
  • Whitetail Shotgun/Muzzleloader Dates: Antlerless whitetail only; Dates To be determined

All permitted hunters must have a Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (MT FWP) A or B tag and comply with MT FWP Hunting District 260 regulations and harvest limits.

Teller Whitetail Deer Hunting Units:

Whitetail deer hunting takes place on three units at The Teller:

  • The South Unit is managed in cooperation with the MT FWP Block Management Program. Opportunities are offered to the public at no charge. For information about hunting the MT FWP Block Management South Unit, call MT FWP Office in Missoula at (406) 542-5500. Block management archery deer hunting is offered in 2 week blocks with Tuesdays and Thursdays being closed to hunting.
  • The Central and North Units are managed by Teller. Hunting permit preferences are offered to lodging guests, donors, and volunteers who work on Teller projects. In 2009, hunting slots will be selected through an application drawing for registered volunteers. All successful applicants will be notified by August 22, 2009.

Hunting blocks are as follows:

  • Archery hunts are scheduled for 8 day blocks
  • Muzzleloader/shotgun hunts are scheduled for 3-day blocks

  Volunteer Applications must be received at the Teller Office by August 15, 2009.

Changes From Last year: Volunteer Archery Deer hunting is offered in 8 day blocks beginning on a Saturday and ending on the following Saturday.  Tuesdays and Thursdays are open to volunteer archery deer hunting. 

The following guidelines apply to all Whitetail Deer Hunting on Teller (Teller-managed and MT FWP-managed).

1. Permission is required for all archery or shotgun whitetail deer hunting on Teller.

2. Volunteers selected will be limited to one block per season. The primary applicant may list a second 2009 Teller Volunteer hunter to accompany them.

3. Hunting may begin on the morning of the first day selected and must conclude after legal shooting hours on the last day of the selected dates.

4. Hunting from tree stands, ground blinds, and slings only. All stands must be removed on or before the last day of the hunt date.

5. No permanent hunting stands allowed.

6. Hunters must sign a Liability Release Form before gaining access to Teller.

7. Driving allowed on Teller main gravel road only. Parking allowed only in designated parking areas, as shown on map-all parking areas are clearly marked. Walk in only from designated parking areas.

8. Hunters must record accurate hunt information on the "hunter's log" provided with a permit.

9. Hunters must hunt within the designated boundaries of their hunting unit only, and be respectful of the presence of other hunters on Teller-including archery, pheasant, and waterfowl.

10. Hunters failing to comply with the Teller 2009 Guidelines and all pertinent state and federal regulations will be asked to forfeit their permit and leave the property.

11. NOTE: If you must cancel a hunting reservation, please contact Teller ASAP. We receive many requests for hunting and make every effort to fill open slots. If a hunter does not show up, and hasn't contacted us, that hunter will not be invited back to hunt Teller in the same season.
